Call for consecration originated with Our Lady of Fatima

The feast of the Annunciation, March 25 which celebrates the moment in which Mary accedes in all wonder and mystery to be the mother of God’s beloved Son, takes on added significance this year in response to Pope Francis’ call to the church to consecrate Russia and the Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

For nearly a month now, there is a desperate plea and prayer for peace for the people of the Ukraine. Our prayer is not limited to this conflict but reaches out to all war-torn nations in our world. However, the inspiration to consecrate a nation, in particular, Russia, afflicted by communism, to the Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Heart originated with Our Lady of Fátima, based on her apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria, in Fátima, Portugal.

The three children were Lucía dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The apparitions occurred between May 13, 1917 and Sept. 13, 1917. The consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was first requested on July 13, 1917 as World War I raged and the menace of communism was advancing.

Pope Francis’ decision to consecrate Russia and the Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Solemnity of the Annunciation comes at another crucial time for the church and the world. The Ukraine’s Latin Rite Bishops made the appeal to Pope Francis after Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24, one month ago.

This is not the first time that the Vicar of Christ, the Bishop of Rome, has consecrated nations and peoples to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In the aftermath of the assassination attempt on his life in 1981, St. Pope John Paul II immediately thought of consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and he himself composed a prayer for what he called an “Act of Entrustment,” which was to be celebrated in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on June 7, 1981, the Solemnity of Pentecost. The following is the part which refers specifically to the Act of Entrustment:

“Mother of all individuals and peoples, you know all their sufferings and hopes. In your motherly heart you feel all the struggles between good and evil, between light and darkness, that convulse the world: accept the plea which we make in the Holy Spirit directly to your heart and embrace with the love of the Mother and Handmaid of the Lord those who most await this embrace, and also those whose act of entrustment you too await in a particular way. Take under your motherly protection the whole human family, which with affectionate love we entrust to you, O Mother. May there dawn for everyone the time of peace and freedom, the time of truth, of justice and of hope.”

In order to respond more fully to the requests of Our Lady, the Holy Father desired to make more explicit during the Holy Year of the Redemption the Act of Entrustment of May 7, 1981, which had been repeated in Fatima on May 13, 1982.

On March 25, 1984 in St. Peter’s Square, while recalling the fiat uttered by Mary at the Annunciation, the Holy Father, in spiritual union with the Bishops of the world, who had been convoked beforehand, entrusted all men and women and all peoples to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in terms which recalled the heartfelt words spoken in 1981.

In a 1989 handwritten letter, Sister Lucia said that Pope John Paul’s consecration of the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was “accepted in heaven.” The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said the consecration had been completed to Sister Lucía’s satisfaction. “The decision of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to make public the third part of the secret of Fatima brings to an end a period of history marked by tragic human lust for power and evil, yet pervaded by the merciful love of God and the watchful care of the Mother of Jesus and of the church.” (The Message of Fatima, 2000)

On Friday, March 25 there will be prayers of consecration rising up to heaven from all over the world. Our diocese will be in solidarity with the universal church with a special holy hour of consecration at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle in Jackson, followed by Mass for the Solemnity of the Annunciation. Likewise, there will be prayer throughout the diocese.

Cardinal Ratzinger as head of the Congregation on the Doctrine of the Faith wrote in the 2000 document, “The Message of Fatima” that “we believe that the action of God, the Lord of history, and the co-responsibility of men and women in the drama of God’s creative freedom, are the two pillars upon which human history is built. Our Lady, who appeared at Fatima, recalls these forgotten values. She reminds us that humanity’s future is in God, and that we are active and responsible partners in creating that future.”
The following is an excerpt from the prayers that will rise like incense on the Solemnity of the Annunciation.

“Most Holy Virgin Mary, tender Mother of men and women, to fulfill the desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the request of the Vicar of Your Son on earth, we consecrate Russia and the Ukraine to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and we recommend to You, all the people of our country and all the world. Please accept our consecration, dearest Mother, and use us as You wish to accomplish Your designs in the world.”

La fiesta de la Anunciación, el 25 de marzo, celebra el momento en que María accede con todo asombro y misterio a ser la madre del Hijo amado de Dios. Este año adquiere un significado adicional en respuesta al llamado del Papa Francisco a la iglesia para consagrar Rusia y Ucrania al Inmaculado Corazón de María.
Desde hace casi un mes, hay una súplica y oración desesperadas por la paz para el pueblo de Ucrania. Nuestra oración no se limita a este conflicto, sino que se extiende a todas las naciones devastadas por la guerra en nuestro mundo. Toma bajo tu protección materna a toda la familia humana a la que, con todo afecto a ti, Madre, confiamos. Que se acerque para todos, el tiempo de la paz y de la libertad, el tiempo de la verdad, de la justicia y de la esperanza.”

Para responder más plenamente a las peticiones de Nuestra Señora, el Santo Padre quiso hacer más explícito el Acta de Encomienda durante el Año Santo de la Redención del 7 de mayo de 1981, que había sido repetida en Fátima el 13 de mayo de 1982.

El 25 de marzo de 1984 en la Plaza de San Pedro, recordando el fiat pronunciado por María en la Anunciación, el Santo Padre, en unión espiritual con los Obispos del mundo, que habían sido convocados de antemano, encomendó a todos los hombres y mujeres de todos los pueblos al Inmaculado Corazón de María, en términos que recordaron las sentidas palabras pronunciadas en 1981.

El viernes 25 de marzo habrá oraciones de consagración subiendo al cielo desde todo el mundo.
Nuestra diócesis se solidarizará con la iglesia universal con una hora santa especial de consagración a las 11 a.m. en la Catedral de San Pedro Apóstol en Jackson, seguida de una Misa por la Solemnidad de la Anunciación. Asimismo, habrá oración a través de toda la diócesis.

El Cardenal Ratzinger como jefe de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe escribió en el documento de 2000, “El Mensaje de Fátima” que “…creemos que la acción de Dios, Señor de la historia y la corresponsabilidad de hombres y mujeres en el drama de la libertad creadora de Dios, son los dos pilares sobre los que se construye la historia humana. Nuestra Señora, que se apareció en Fátima, recuerda estos valores olvidados. Ella nos recuerda que el futuro de la humanidad está en Dios y que somos socios activos y responsables en la creación de ese futuro.”

Lo siguiente es un extracto de las oraciones que se elevarán como incienso en la Solemnidad de la Anunciación.

“Santísima Virgen María, tierna Madre de los hombres y mujeres, para cumplir los deseos del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y la petición del Vicario de Tu Hijo en la tierra, consagramos Rusia y Ucrania a tu Doloroso e Inmaculado Corazón, ¡oh!, Reina del Santísimo Rosario y encomendamos a Ti, a todo el pueblo de nuestra patria y de todo el mundo. “What do the Scriptures say?” This was the question at the beginning of the passage from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans last weekend at the outset of Lent. Paul’s response to his own rhetorical introduction is the Kerygma. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart, then you will be saved.” Having been grasped by Christ, St. Paul testifies that “I live no longer I, but Christ who lives in me,” and “the love of Christ compels me,” and “I count all else as rubbish in the knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ.”

This is the repentance and conversion that beckons us on Ash Wednesday with the words, “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are an invitation to walk faithfully with the Holy One who loves and saves us.

What do the Scriptures say? What a fundamentally important question for our lives of faith with every facet that ultimately matters, in this case, the mystery of evil. On the first Sunday in Lent, we have the definitive struggle between Jesus and the devil, the evil one, the enemy, the malicious spirit of this world and what the Scriptures say carried the day for the Son of God, divine yet wholly human.

Stones into bread, the deceiver allured. “One does not live by bread alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God.” From the mountaintop with the Putinesque vision of reality, the enemy enticed. “This can all be yours if you but bow down and worship me.” Ah no, “You shall adore the Lord your God, him alone shall you serve.” Finally, onto from the parapet of the Temple the devil led with the seduction of religious power through a false representation of the living God. In turn, Jesus countered with the disarming response; “you shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”

What does the church say in the Sacrament of Baptism about the mystery of evil? “Do you reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises?” Or, do you reject the glamour of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin?”

Obviously, we are not shadow boxing in the renewal of our baptismal promises over these forty days, accompanying the catechumens and candidates with whom we will proclaim to the world that although evil, sin and death are all too real, yet, they do not have the final word, because the crucified one is risen.

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) say about the mystery of evil that is a compilation of nearly 2000 years of the prayerful and lived experience of the followers of Christ?

Soberly, we read that evil, suffering, injustice and death contradict the Good News of Jesus Christ, and shakes the faith of the believers. (164) At times, God seems absent and incapable of stopping evil. Yet, we are not powerless, because God’s power is evident in the raising of Jesus Christ from the dead which is the first and final word in life and in death. (272)

Yet, why does evil even exist? (309) St. Augustine says that we cannot find a solution, a way out except through conversion to the living God. (385)

We have to fight the movements of concupiscence and the lure of sin that never cease to bring us to the threshold of evil. We are called to reverse the rebellion at the beginning and realize a rupture with sin, a hatred of evil, a disgust with past sinful action, relying on the grace and mercy of God. (1431)

The presence of evil impacts all relationships including marriage, threatening the bond of unity through discord, domination, infidelity, jealousy and conflicts. (1606) What is necessary is a life of placing oneself in the hands of God, a handing of oneself over in adoration and service. (1889)

These citations up to now are taken from the first three sections of the CCC, the Creed, the Sacraments and Life in Christ. The fourth and final section of the CCC is the unfolding of the Lord’s prayer, the mind and heart of Christ that address temptation and the reality of evil.

By God’s grace and the power of faith we can put aside temptation and walk away from the destructive path and pain of evil. Recall Jesus’ prayer at the Last Supper. “I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you guard them from the evil one.” (John 17:15) (CCC 2850)

Indeed, Jesus wants us to be fully engaged in this fallen world, because in Him we are the light of the world, witnesses to faith, hope and love, reconciliation, justice and peace, and the promise of eternal life. May we seek the answers to life’s unrelenting questions in the Scriptures and the living tradition of the church.

Mississippi bishops issue joint statement on bill no. 2643

JACKSON – On Feb. 28, Bishops Joseph R. Kopacz and Louis F. Kihneman, III of the Dioceses of Jackson and Biloxi wrote a letter to Speaker of the House, Phillip Gunn, expressing their concern over Senate Bill 2643, specifically its proposal for a 13th cause that in effect would open the door to a process of unilateral divorce.

The Bishops wrote that “For the past 50 years the State of Mississippi rightly has codified the compelling grounds that protect the rights of the injured party in a marriage to petition for divorce. Desertion, chronic drug and/or alcohol abuse, spousal domestic abuse, intellectual disability and mental illness do erode and can devastate the bond of marriage. The rights and wellbeing of the injured spouse and family members must be upheld in such cases.”

With regard to mental illness the Bishops expressed this 12th cause for divorce thoroughly addresses the safeguards that must be in place in order to determine beyond a reasonable doubt that the mental illness undermines one’s capacity for marriage. These precautions are prudent and just and well-grounded in jurisprudence that surrounds marriage with the presumption of permanence.

“As written, [the 13th cause] is lacking in any of the intrinsic safeguards that are so evident in the 12th cause on mental illness,” wrote the Bishops. “… the 13th cause appears to be going down a slippery slope that could erode the institution of marriage and thus undermine the common good of society.”

On March 1, SB2643 died in committee in the House after passing through the Senate. However, the proposed amendment adding the thirteenth cause for divorce, was added to House Bill 770, an act to create the Mississippi Equal Pay Act, by the Senate on March 1, keeping the amendment alive.

¿Qué dicen las Escrituras?, fue la pregunta, al comienzo del pasaje de la carta de San Pablo a los Romanos, el pasado fin de semana al comienzo de la Cuaresma. La respuesta de Pablo a su propia introducción retórica es el Kerygma. “Si con tu boca reconoces a Jesús como Señor, y con tu corazón crees que Dios lo resucitó, alcanzarás la salvación.” (Rom 10:9) Habiendo sido atado por Cristo, San Pablo testifica que “… y ya no soy yo quien vive, sino que es Cristo quien vive en mí,” (Ga 2:20); “… el amor de Cristo se ha apoderado de nosotros,” (2Cor 5:14) y “… a nada le concedo valor si lo comparo con el bien supremo de conocer a Cristo Jesús.” (Fil 3:8)

Este es el arrepentimiento y la conversión que nos llama el Miércoles de Ceniza con las palabras, “apártense del pecado y sean fieles al Evangelio.” La oración, el ayuno y la limosna son una invitación a caminar fielmente con el Santo que nos ama y nos salva.

¿Qué dicen las Escrituras? Qué pregunta tan fundamentalmente importante para nuestras vidas de fe, con todas las facetas que en última instancia importan, como es en este caso, el misterio del mal. El primer domingo de Cuaresma tenemos la lucha definitiva entre Jesús y el diablo, el enemigo, el espíritu maligno de este mundo y lo que las Escrituras dicen que triunfó para el Hijo de Dios, totalmente divino, pero humano.

Piedras en pan, el engañador sedujo. “No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino también de toda palabra que salga de los labios de Dios.” (Mt 4:4) Desde la cima de la montaña con la visión Putinesca de la realidad, seduce el enemigo. “Yo te daré todo esto, si te arrodillas y me adoras.” (Mt 4:9) ¡Ah no!, “Adora al Señor tu Dios, y sírvele sólo a él.” (Mt 4:10) Finalmente, desde el parapeto del Templo, el diablo condujo la seducción al poder religioso a través de una falsa representación del Dios vivo. A su vez, Jesús respondió con una respuesta terminante; “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios.” (Mt 4:7)

¿Qué dice la iglesia en el Sacramento del Bautismo sobre el misterio del mal? “¿Rechazas a Satanás y todas sus obras y todas sus promesas vacías?” ¿O rechazas el espejismo del mal y te niegas a ser dominado por el pecado?

Obviamente, durante estos cuarenta días, no estamos haciendo sombra en la renovación de nuestras promesas bautismales, acompañando a los catecúmenos y candidatos con quienes proclamaremos al mundo que, aunque el mal, el pecado y la muerte son demasiado reales, estos no lo son y no tienen la última palabra porque el crucificado ha resucitado.

¿Qué dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC) sobre el misterio del mal?
El CIC es una compilación de casi 2000 años de experiencia orante y vivida de los seguidores de Cristo. Sobriamente, leemos que el mal, el sufrimiento, la injusticia y la muerte contradicen la Buena Noticia de Jesucristo y sacuden la fe de los creyentes.” (CIC 164) A veces, Dios parece ausente e incapaz de detener el mal. Sin embargo, no somos impotentes, porque el poder de Dios se manifiesta en la resurrección de Jesucristo de entre los muertos, que es la primera y última palabra en la vida y en la muerte. (CIC 272)

Sin embargo, ¿por qué existe el mal? (CIC 309) San Agustín dice que no podemos encontrar una solución, una salida, sino a través de la conversión al Dios vivo. (CIC 385)

Tenemos que combatir los movimientos de la concupiscencia y la tentación del pecado que no cesan de llevarnos al umbral del mal. Estamos llamados a revertir la rebelión del principio y realizar una ruptura con el pecado, un odio al mal, un disgusto con la acción pecaminosa del pasado, confiando en la gracia y la misericordia de Dios. (CIC 1431)
La presencia del mal afecta todas las relaciones, incluido el matrimonio, amenazando el vínculo de unidad a través de la discordia, la dominación, la infidelidad, los celos y los conflictos. (CIC 1606) Lo que se necesita es una vida de ponerse en las manos de Dios, entregarse en adoración y servicio. (CIC 1889)

Estas citas hasta ahora están tomadas de las tres primeras secciones del CIC, el Credo, los Sacramentos y la Vida en Cristo. La cuarta y última sección del CIC es el desarrollo de la oración del Señor, la mente y el corazón de Cristo que aborda la tentación y la realidad del mal.

De hecho, Jesús quiere que nos comprometamos plenamente con este mundo caído porque en Él somos la luz del mundo, testigos de la fe, la esperanza y el amor, la reconciliación, la justicia, la paz y la promesa de la vida eterna y que busquemos las respuestas a las preguntas implacables de la vida en las Escrituras y en la tradición viva de la iglesia.

Ash Wednesday takes us to basics of faith

Ash Wednesday awaits us in a few days, beginning the 40-day spiritual journey for our Catholic world. It is a spiritual undertaking, yet there is nothing vague or aimless about the precious time ahead because the Lord provides the framework on Ash Wednesday with the imperatives of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Taken together these three pillars, especially magnified during Lent, allow the Holy Spirit to bring about the inner conversion that is life-long, with its outer manifestation in a faithful, compassionate and generous way of living.

Of course, each year the ultimate goal of this venerable 40-day undertaking is to grow in the love of Jesus Christ, the crucified and resurrected Good Shepherd who is the way, the truth and the life. Following a wholehearted Lenten observance, the Easter Sunday renewal of our Baptism vows is the extraordinary way of proclaiming this love in communion and solidarity with believers throughout our Catholic world. Banking on the Lord’s assurance, the 3-ply cord of prayer, fasting and abstinence will foster in us a keener awareness that we are God’s children now, and temples of the Holy Spirit.

Ash Wednesday takes us back to the basics of our faith with the admonitions during the distribution of ashes to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel,” or “remember, that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Taken together they profess the fundamental reality that sin and death hold us in their grasp. The way out is the call to repentance that rests upon the fundamental teaching of our faith which we know as the Kerygma.

We recall the words of St. Peter, the inaugural proclamation of the Gospel on Pentecost Sunday because we want to respond to this call as if we were hearing them for the first time.

When they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “what are we to do brethren?’ Peter answered, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise that was made is for you, for your children, and for all those who are far away, for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:37-39)

A faithful response to the call to conversion impacts who we are and all that we do. For example, how does all of this apply to the diocesan wide and worldwide process for the Synod on Synodality? Consider, that the Lord’s call to repentance is rooted in metanoia, the concept that describes the changing of one’s mind and going in another direction. Dialogue, based in prayer, the Word of God, and God’s Holy Spirit, the framework for our Synodal process, depends upon each one of us putting our sin-stained minds aside, our preconceived notions, our prejudices, our egos, our pride and our sinfulness in order to arrive at a higher level of communion, participation and mission as members of the Catholic Church.

It’s true that our broad-based diocesan response to the Synod on Synodality about to conclude its first phase, will bear much fruit in the future. At the deepest level, perhaps imperceptibly it is planting the seeds of conversion, or metanoia, a change of mind and behavior toward greater openness to one another in the Holy Spirit. A healthy process of participation and communion can inspire a change of heart, and in turn an individual’s conversion can be a stream of clean water that refreshes the body. This is our prayer.

Prayer: the turning of our hearts and minds to God; fasting: the letting go of that which is harming us, as well as sacrificing simple pleasures for a greater good; and almsgiving: the sacrificial generosity for the good of others, and for our own conversion, are the weapons of the spirit, and the medicine for much that ails us. They are more accessible than over the counter drugs and served up on demand without the need to download an app.

“May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.” (2Thessalonians 3:17)

La salida es el llamado al arrepentimiento que descansa sobre la enseñanza fundamental de nuestra fe que conocemos como el Kerygma.

Recordamos las palabras de san Pedro, cuando dijo las palabras inaugurales del Evangelio del domingo de Pentecostés, porque queremos responder a esta llamada como si las escucháramos por primera vez.

“Cuando los allí reunidos oyeron esto, se afligieron profundamente, y preguntaron a Pedro y a los otros apóstoles: — Hermanos, ¿qué debemos hacer? Pedro les contestó: “Vuélvanse a Dios y bautícese cada uno en el nombre de Jesucristo, para que Dios les perdone sus pecados, y así él les dará el Espíritu Santo. Porque esta promesa es para ustedes y para sus hijos, y también para todos los que están lejos; es decir, para todos aquellos a quienes el Señor nuestro Dios quiera llamar.” (Hechos 2:37-39)

Una respuesta fiel al llamado a la conversión impacta quiénes somos y todo lo que hacemos. Por ejemplo, ¿cómo se aplica todo esto al proceso diocesano y mundial para el Sínodo sobre la Sinodalidad? Considere que el llamado del Señor al arrepentimiento tiene sus raíces en la metanoia, el concepto que describe el cambio de mentalidad y el ir en otra dirección. El diálogo, basado en la oración, la Palabra de Dios y el Espíritu Santo de Dios, marco de nuestro proceso sinodal, depende de que cada uno de nosotros dejemos de lado nuestras mentes manchadas por el pecado, nuestras ideas preconcebidas, nuestros prejuicios, nuestros egos, nuestro orgullo y nuestra pecaminosidad para llegar a un nivel superior de comunión, participación y misión como miembros de la Iglesia Católica.

Es cierto que nuestra amplia respuesta diocesana al Sínodo sobre la Sinodalidad, que está a punto de concluir su primera fase, dará muchos frutos en el futuro. En el nivel más profundo, tal vez imperceptiblemente, está plantando las semillas de la conversión, o metanoia, un cambio de mentalidad y comportamiento hacia una mayor apertura mutua en el Espíritu Santo. Un proceso sano de participación y comunión puede inspirar un cambio de corazón y, a su vez, la conversión de una persona puede ser un chorro de agua limpia que refresca el cuerpo. Esta es nuestra oración.

Oración: la vuelta de nuestros corazones y mentes a Dios; el Ayuno: dejar ir lo que nos está dañando, así como sacrificar los placeres simples por un bien mayor; y la Caridad: la generosidad sacrificial por el bien de los demás, y por nuestra propia conversión, son las armas del espíritu, y la medicina para mucho de lo que nos aflige. Son más accesibles que los medicamentos de venta libre y se sirven a pedido sin necesidad de descargar una aplicación.

“Y que el mismo Señor de la paz les dé la paz a ustedes en todo tiempo y en todas formas. Que el Señor esté con todos ustedes.” (2 Tesalonicenses 3:16)

Bishop reconsecrates church, parish community stronger after desecration

GREENWOOD – The faith-filled parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Greenwood refuse to let a break-in that desecrated their parish triumph over their spirit, choosing to forgive and pray for the Holy Spirit to fill the hearts of the perpetrators.

On Wednesday, Jan. 26 choir members arriving for practice discovered their parish had been vandalized. Some parishioners described the scene as if a tornado had blown through it.

The altar was overturned, hymnals were ripped from their spines with papers strewn around the sanctuary, the pulpit was overturned, as well. A statue of Mary, over 100 years old, was pulled down and her face broken into pieces. Many other items were turned over and bent. Also broken was an antique baptismal font.

Most disturbing for some parishioners was that the tabernacle was breached and the Blessed Sacrament removed, it being place on the church’s original altar. But through grace, the hosts did not appear to be touched. Parishioners like Mary Jane Faulkner felt the situation could have been worse.

“They didn’t break the windows … they could have caught the church on fire, when they destroyed Mary next to the candles,” said Faulkner, who also works for the parish in communications. “So, we were blessed. It is amazing they didn’t demolish some of the other things they could have,” she concluded.

According to the USCCB at least 120 incidents, like the one occurring at Immaculate Heart, have occurred across 31 states and the District of Columbia since May 2020. Incidents include arson, statues beheaded, limbs cut, and smashed and painted, gravestones defaced with swastikas and anti-Catholic language and American flags next to them burned, and other destruction and vandalism. The conference even has a dedicated page on its website listing news stories that detail vandalism by month, since they began tracking incidents in May of 2020.

Pastor of Immaculate Heart, José de Jesús Sánchez expressed his “shock and grief” over the break-in over social media to the Catholic community, alerting them of the destruction in his parish. He was away at a family wedding in his home country of Mexico at the time of the incident.

People were hit hard by the images shared by Father Sánchez, including Bishop Joseph Kopacz, who said “at the same time, much prayer has been offered” from those across the diocese through the power of social media.
Amid all of the destruction at Immaculate Heart, Bishop Kopacz traveled to the parish on Wednesday, Feb. 1 to reconsecrate the church.

“We will reconsecrate this church once again to God in the Lord,” said Bishop Kopacz. “With great faith, hope and love with the desire to truly go forward, knowing that we have reconciled on a very deep level.”

Some in the parish, felt that the intent behind the destruction was to have parishioners lose their faith but the faith of the Immaculate Heart community is strong.

“We give thanks for this gift of faith, that can be assaulted, that can be hurt, but cannot be overcome in the Lord,” said Bishop Kopacz.

During his homily, Bishop Kopacz spoke of the destruction and evil that occurred within the walls of the church, mentioning the overturned pulpit and altar.

“The Word of God, another sacred part of who we are, was overturned, as if to say ‘We don’t want this Word proclaimed from this pulpit,’” said Bishop Kopacz, likening the destruction as malice. “That’s not just juvenile, ‘let’s just wreak a little havoc in this building.’”

Additionally, mentioned was the overturned altar and disturbed sacrament with Bishop Kopacz stating that “it was a deliberate blow to all that is sacred to us.”

As a part of the reconsecration of the church, Bishop Kopacz took great care in anointing the altar and with Chrism, in addition to the use of holy water to renew the baptismal promise of those present. “This seeks to make right, what has been wronged,” he said.

On Feb. 1, parishioners assist Father Sánchez in replacing the altar linens after Bishop Joseph Kopacz reconsecrated the altar after the parish was broken into and the altar overturned a week earlier.

“Our altar represents Christ – it is Christ. … In the anointing, we are allowing the Lord to again come before us in a most powerful way to be our Good Shepherd and for us to know Him. For us to then enter deeply into the mystery of his life. … Heaven and earth are joined together each time we celebrate the Eucharist.”

After the Mass, parishioners like Faulkner expressed their gratitude and were moved by the beauty in the care of the reconsecration.

“I have never seen anything like it. It was extremely moving and beautiful,” said Faulkner.

Father Sánchez gave thanks for the experience of the reconsecration and was grateful for the feeling of hope, also witnessing a consecration of a church for the first time. “It was really beautiful and we know that we are not alone.”

“It is a new opportunity for all of us in the Body of Christ … and we can say to the enemy that if Christ is with us, who is against us.”

Parish coordinator and director of religious education, Emelia Joseph, who has worked tirelessly getting new keys, meeting with police officers and more in the wake of the break-in, is thankful for the support of the Greenwood community and the people of the diocese.

“We know through the grace of God and all the people who have contacted us, with prayer and their support, that we are not only going to rally through this, but we are going to be stronger than ever.”

Synod, foundation of church restoration

The fire that nearly destroyed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris seems like a distant memory. In fact, it occurred less than three years ago on April 15, 2019, but we would agree that it has faded from the public’s awareness. This is due in large part to the pandemic which has been burning non-stop for the past two years with its accompanying social and economic upheavals. Yet, the labor of love to restore this world-renowned icon has not lost momentum, although it progresses out of the public view.

The massive undertaking for the complete restoration of Our Lady’s house of worship is slated for 2024. This anticipated time frame is nothing short of a miracle, and it brings to light the commitment of the French nation, believer and non-believer alike, to restore this priceless national treasure.

Although the practice of the Catholic faith in France and in much of Europe is struggling to emerge out of the ashes of disregard, the flow of pilgrims and tourists to this 800-year-old Medieval masterpiece is robust. Neither the church nor the state wants to face the future in the absence of this transcendent icon of faith and culture. Fortunately, the statues of the 12 Apostles got out of town four days before the fire for their own scheduled restoration. They are providing a good foundation upon which to rebuild.

On that note, Pope Francis, the successor of St. Peter, in collaboration with bishops throughout the world, the successors of the Apostles, is calling for a grass roots effort among the faithful to embrace a process of renewal and restoration in the church through the Synod on Synodality. In recent times, many forces have ravaged the church like a destructive fire and scattered the faithful, including the pandemic, scandals, divisions and a general hostility toward all things religious. Pope Francis hopes that the Synodal process of communion, participation and mission can be a counterweight to the pressures that are tearing at the fabric of the church’s unity and integrity.

The spirit of the Synod has been evident in the major works of Pope Francis since the outset of his papacy. From the Joy of the Gospel to his most recent works, Fratelli Tutti and Let us Dream as the pandemic continued to engulf the world, his heartfelt vision is that fraternity will rise to the level of liberty and equality, creating an authentic solidarity within the church and among the nations of our world in the face of glaring disparity. His hope is that through a world-wide synodal process the Holy Spirit can breathe new life into the church, and in turn the church can be a witness to the world of the good fruit of dialogue, respectful listening and discernment on behalf of the common good.

Experience informs us that this Synodal process of encounter and accompaniment cannot succeed apart from prayer and the Word of God. Otherwise, polarization and politicization will derail the best of intentions, and the divisions within the church and all around her will spoil the moment. Rather, arising from our fundamental identity as the Body of Christ, we have developed a process in the Diocese of Jackson of communion, participation and mission that appeals to our better angels.

Under the gaze of the Holy Spirit seeks to kindle the voice of the faithful in order to better read the signs of the times with the mind and heart of Jesus Christ. We have developed the process in order to maximize the level of participation in our parishes and schools, and in a whole host of organizations and extra-parochial ministries. We hope that there will be much to digest from which will emerge our diocesan 10-page synthesis that eventually will be a stream flowing into a mighty river that will flow all the way to Rome.

If believers and non-believers in admirable fraternity can commit themselves to the full restoration of Notre Dame, a transcendent icon of faith and culture, then it is our hope that the Holy Spirit will guide the people of God in the Diocese of Jackson and throughout the world in the restoration of the church which is the icon and sacrament of salvation.
